Day 15 – 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

December 9, 2025/

Changing the Future by Protecting Every Girl Today

A Message by the Ethiopian Network of Women’s Shelters (ENWS)

As the world approaches the final days of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Day 15 offers a critical reflection on the role of girls and young women in shaping Ethiopia’s future and the urgent need to safeguard their rights, voices, and dreams.

While progress toward gender equality is growing, many girls across the country still face violence long before they reach adulthood. Harmful traditional practices, school-based harassment, online abuse, and community silence continue to hinder their safety, health, and education. These challenges are not individual stories, they are national concerns with long-term impact.

Girls at the Center of Change

Girls are not only beneficiaries of social progress, they are drivers of it. When they are protected, educated, and empowered, entire communities thrive. Research consistently shows that when girls are given equal opportunities, countries experience stronger economies, better health outcomes, and greater stability.
Yet these possibilities can only be unlocked when girls live free from violence.

Barriers Girls Face Today

Across Ethiopia, girls encounter different layers of violence and vulnerability:

  • Harassment and abuse in schools, where unsafe classrooms limit learning and self-confidence
  • Threats of early marriage, cutting childhood short and exposing girls to lifelong physical and emotional harm
  • Online exploitation, cyber bullying, and digital harassment
  • Silence and stigma that discourage girls from speaking out
  • Limited access to protection services, especially in remote areas

These experiences restrict the ability of girls to dream, explore, and fully participate in shaping their futures.

ENWS: Building Protective Pathways

The Ethiopian Network of Women’s Shelters (ENWS) continues to advocate for systems that listen to, protect, and invest in girls. Through shelters, community networks, and partnerships with local and international actors, ENWS emphasizes the importance of early intervention and survivor-centered support.

Key actions promoted today include:

  • Creating schools that actively prevent harassment, with strong reporting structures
  • Strengthening digital safety awareness, helping girls navigate online spaces confidently
  • Encouraging families and community leaders to hold conversations about bodily autonomy, consent, and respect
  • Expanding safe shelters and psychosocial services so girls have somewhere to turn
  • Amplifying girls’ voices in community decisions and national agendas

A Future Shaped by Safety and Equality

Protecting girls today means laying the foundation for an Ethiopia where women lead, innovate, and uplift society without the burden of violence holding them back. Every act of protection, every report, every conversation, every supportive community, helps reshape a girl’s life trajectory.

This is not just advocacy. It is a national investment.
It is a commitment to a future where girls grow into women who are confident, resilient, and free from harm.

As Day 15 unfolds, ENWS calls on everyone to stand for the rights of girls, to ensure their safety not only as individuals, but as essential pillars of Ethiopia’s tomorrow.

Protect a girl. Protect a generation.

Day 14 – 16 Days of Activism: Strengthening Community and Survivor Support 🤝🏘️

December 8, 2025/

“On Day 14 of the 16 Days of Activism, we shine a light on the vital role communities play in preventing and responding to gender-based violence. Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is a result of harmful societal norms, unequal power dynamics, and entrenched gender biases. These conditions can and must be challenged, and it is the collective responsibility of every individual, institution, and community to take action.

The Ethiopian Network of Women Shelters (ENWS) continues to strengthen shelters and community-based support systems across Ethiopia. ENWS ensures that survivors have access not only to safe spaces but also to holistic care, including psycho-social support, legal advocacy, medical assistance, educational and vocational opportunities, and economic empowerment programs. By empowering survivors, ENWS enables them to reclaim their lives with dignity, resilience, and confidence.

ENWS also recognizes that sustainable change comes from community engagement. When communities are informed, involved, and empowered, they become active partners in creating safer environments, challenging harmful practices, and supporting survivors to reintegrate successfully. Local leaders, social service providers, families, and institutions all play a critical role in this ecosystem of protection and empowerment.

On this 14th day of activism, ENWS calls on all stakeholders to stand in solidarity with survivors, speak out against abuse, and advocate for gender equality at every level of society. Every conversation, every referral, every act of support contributes to building an Ethiopia where GBV is not tolerated, where justice prevails, and where women and girls can thrive in safety, dignity, and opportunity. Together, we can transform societal norms, strengthen community resilience, and create a future free from gender-based violence.”
