International Shelters Day: A Call to Support Safe Spaces

November 18, 2025/

Today marks International Shelters Day, a powerful reminder of the essential role shelters play in protecting and supporting vulnerable individuals, especially women, children, and survivors of violence. Shelters are more than temporary spaces; they provide safety, healing, and hope for those seeking refuge from abuse, homelessness, conflict, or crisis.

In Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Network of Women’s Shelters (ENWS) and its member organizations continue to work tirelessly to offer safe accommodation, psychosocial support, legal assistance, economic empowerment, and pathways toward independence for survivors. Their collective efforts not only save lives but strengthen communities by ensuring that women and children are never left without protection.

On this important day, ENWS encourages everyone to amplify survivor-centered messages, share stories of resilience from shelter communities, highlight the ongoing need for protection services, and promote ways the public can get involved, through volunteering, advocacy, donations, or supporting local shelter initiatives.

Together, let’s raise awareness and stand in solidarity with all those who provide and rely on these vital services. Safe spaces save lives.

✨ The 16 Days of Activism Is Coming, Be Ready and Stay Alert! ✊🧡

November 17, 2025/

The annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is approaching quickly, running from November 25 to December 10. This global campaign reminds us that the fight to end violence against women and girls is everyone’s responsibility   in our homes, communities, institutions, and now more than ever, online.

This year’s theme, “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” draws attention to the urgent rise of online abuse. Digital violence, including harassment, cyber stalking, image-based abuse, and online threats continues to harm countless women and girls, especially in vulnerable communities.

As part of this movement, the Ethiopian Network of Women’s Shelters (ENWS) stands committed to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and promoting safe online spaces. ENWS and its member shelters work every day to protect women and girls, advocate for stronger systems, and ensure survivors have access to safety, justice, and dignity , both offline and online.

As the campaign nears, let’s prepare to raise our voices loudly and clearly:

  • Speak out against all forms of violence physical, emotional, and digital.
  • Support survivors by amplifying their needs and stories.
  • Promote digital safety and challenge harmful online behaviors.
  • Join ENWS initiatives, events, and awareness activities throughout the 16 Days.

This is more than a campaign, it’s a movement.
It’s a call to action.
And ENWS is proud to be part of the frontline.

The 16 Days of Activism is coming. Be ready. Take a stand. Be part of the movement. 🧡
