International Shelters Day: A Call to Support Safe Spaces
Today marks International Shelters Day, a powerful reminder of the essential role shelters play in protecting and supporting vulnerable individuals, especially women, children, and survivors of violence. Shelters are more than temporary spaces; they provide safety, healing, and hope for those seeking refuge from abuse, homelessness, conflict, or crisis.
In Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Network of Women’s Shelters (ENWS) and its member organizations continue to work tirelessly to offer safe accommodation, psychosocial support, legal assistance, economic empowerment, and pathways toward independence for survivors. Their collective efforts not only save lives but strengthen communities by ensuring that women and children are never left without protection.
On this important day, ENWS encourages everyone to amplify survivor-centered messages, share stories of resilience from shelter communities, highlight the ongoing need for protection services, and promote ways the public can get involved, through volunteering, advocacy, donations, or supporting local shelter initiatives.
Together, let’s raise awareness and stand in solidarity with all those who provide and rely on these vital services. Safe spaces save lives.
